Mental Health Isn’t Optional and Your Health Coverage Shouldn’t Treat It Like It Is

By Darren Grubb, Medicare Advantage Majority spokesperson

May marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month, a helpful reminder to prioritize mental health and recognize its important role in our well-being. This month is all about breaking stigmas around mental illness, promoting emotional well-being, and advocating for better access to mental health resources. Reflecting on this, I want to highlight how seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans are being supported.

Medicare Advantage plans provide private alternatives to original Medicare services for seniors and individuals with disabilities. These plans go beyond basic medical coverage by offering additional services designed to improve older adults’ well-being, helping them stay healthy – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Medicare Advantage is stepping up to support mental and overall wellness.

Most importantly, during this Mental Health Awareness Month, Medicare Advantage plans offer expanded access to a variety of mental health resources. These plans serve a growing portion of the population, particularly older adults who face a higher risk of depression, loneliness, and social isolation as they age. Seniors with Medicare Advantage plans can utilize a variety of services, including therapy, counseling sessions, covered prescriptions, and digital mental wellness tools and apps. Plans include broader access to mental health services, which empower individuals to take proactive steps towards mental well-being each day.

Nearly 1 in 5 older adults live with undiagnosed mental health conditions, and many who do seek help often face barriers to care, leaving too many without the treatment they need. Accessibility is critical when it comes to any type of health care, especially for those living in rural communities or facing mobility challenges. Telehealth services are widely available through Medicare Advantage, allowing patients to connect with licensed mental health professionals from the comfort of their own homes.

Finally, Medicare Advantage plans include coverage for gym memberships, fitness programs, and wellness programs. Although these programs support independence and physical health, they also play a powerful role in contributing to overall better mental health. The ability to stay active and independent supports both the body and mind.

Reflecting on Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s clear that Medicare Advantage provides more than just a health plan. By offering expanded access to mental health services and promoting overall wellness, these plans are helping older adults live healthier lives. When seniors have access to the tools and support they need, they’re better equipped to navigate challenges and maintain their health.

This May, let’s continue to advocate for a system that prioritizes the whole person. Let’s celebrate the steps being taken through Medicare Advantage plans to ensure that mental health is treated and supported.  No one should have to face mental health challenges alone or without resources. Medicare Advantage plans are helping bridge those gaps, making mental wellness more accessible and visible.
